A tribute to brod Jet Arriola.

I first met brod Jet at the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) in the late 70’s. We were both assigned to the Federation of Electric Cooperatives of the Philippines (FECOP) project. As he was 5 years ahead of me in the fraternity, I looked up to him as a “kuya”, an elder brod. Belonging to batch 63 - which on record is the batch where neophytes outnumbered members, he naturally walked the hallways with much pride. On the outside, Jet could be perceived as guarded. However, inwardly and among brods, he manifested his pure unadulterated persona, with his style of humor, amiable and friendly, specially when narrating their glorious days in campus - with me listening with much intent and interest.

As the project was about to end and we/the team destined to be reassigned, I learned of a most tragic accident, one that pierced a dagger into his innermost soul - when, on their way back from a day trip to Corregidor Island, the boat he/his family were on, capsized. Except for him and one child he was able to grab and hold on, others in his family perished.

Devastating.

Jet’s career was on the rise, a young entrepreneur, with much promise - when life suddenly dealt him a severe blow. And, everyone you care - are lost. A life altering event that could have crushed his young life, his dreams and aspiration with irreversible negative consequences.

It did not.

His stint at the Academy was a stabilizing point. Jet was among his elements. Slowly, he picked up himself and the pieces of his life. His reemergence came in 1986 when he was appointed Deputy Customs Commissioner, thereafter building a successful brokerage business - one he was originally destined for.

Jet’s life is not just of resilience. It is one of fortitude - one of courage in pain and adversity.

Something tells me, knowing Jet - in his trials/turbulence, he discovered God - and in doing so - himself.

It is with deep sorrow that UPLB Brod Rene Tiamzon ‘66 passed away at about 12:00 noon Manila time, today Feb. 4, 2026. He died in a hospital in LA. Please pray for him and his family.

Brod Rene’s last get together with us, was when he attended our 2019 Monterey Frat ball. This was during the term of the late Brod GP, Bobby Pascual. He was a very unassuming and soft spoken Brod. In spite of unforeseen circumstances, and a not so good medical condition, he saw to it that he was there to see many Brods and sisters he had not seen for a very long time, including those who attended but went ahead of him. Brod Mel Gulfin+, Brod Bobby Pascual+, Brod Ed Quisumbing+, Brod Johnny Singh+ and Sis Rory Ortega+ to name a few. Brod Rene had been sick and was under treatment for sometime battling the dreaded big C.

Funeral services will be announced soon.
