Sad News. Brod Vic Ramos and Brods, per your kabatch Nelson
Rivera62, your kabatch Augusto "Boya" Macandog passed away this morning. No
details yet. Boya resides in Cebu.
For the information of the generation of Brods that followed after Brod Boya, he
is remembered as the one who challenged Rosig Doming Pauig to a fistfight. Atras
ang yagbol ng Rosig. This happened during the confrontation near Vinzons Hall
between Tabets and Rosig. Franklin Drilon walang kibo. Marching along Arts and
Sciences on the way to Vinzons, we were cheered on by our Sweetheart Karina
Constantino and others.

A Memory of Boya
We, Black Saints'65, were the new brods in early 1966. A "quiet and scholarly" brod (unnamed, now deceased) was slapped by Sigma Rhoan Jimmy Zarte on a late afternoon. (The story was that he was drunk and might not have known he was picking on a Betan.) GP Ed Soliman called an emergency meeting at the Collegian office (Jimmy Yambao or Toti Que was the editor-in-chief) at Vinzons Hall to plan the retaliation. The meeting was highly charged and emotional. (Buddy Garbanzos in a trembling voice - "Shall we let them do this to a brother Betan?") Quietly five brods left the room - Alex King, Boya Macandog, Jun Advincula, Jopet Laraya and Norman Bituin. In Jopet's Renault, we drove to the bilyaran across Vinzons. We hit the Sigma Rhoans while they were playing as Boya, after pushing the billiard balls on the table, shouted - "P----- ina mga Sigma Rho". We went back to the Collegian office. Alex said - "Tama na yang meeting. Inumpisahan na namin!" Very decisive, GP Ed Soliman asked - "Ilan ang kotse natin?" The brods split into 3-4 carloads and made another hit (c/o Nolet Hidalgo, Charles Macalalag) at Area 2 before the night ended.
Early the following morning Sigma Rho made a surprise attack at the tambayan with casualties on both sides. The following day, the brods probably 100+ strong massed up at the College of Vet Med. Marching past the College of AS with Frat Sweetheart Karina Consantino waving from the top floor, we stormed the College of Law and bilyaran. A UP fire truck ready with their hoses followed as we loudly and triumphantly returned to the tambayan. This is what I remember from our second encounter with the law frat. The first encounter shortly after our finals, Alex King, Jun Leyco, Rene Padilla, et. al. busted them up at Capitol Spot, a favorite drinking hole outside the campus.
There are many more memories, among others, of Boya and the brods training and sparring at the UP Beta Sigma Kung Fu Karate Klan grounds of Master Johnny Chiuten at Area 11.
Rest in peace, Brod Boya.
Norm Bituin
