Hail to the Founding Brother

(Eulogy delivered by Brod Vic Ramos, 62UPD, in honor of Founding Brother Melecio “Rico” Arranz, Jr.

during the fraternity’s last rites at the Sanctuario de San Jose Greenhills, San Juan City, on May 26, 2015)

Like many of our Founding Brothers — the Padillas, Jaimes, Escalers Jacintos, among others -- Brod Melecio “Rico” Arranz, Jr. came from a privileged class in our society. He was a favoured son of a Senator of the Republic. Early in life, he was trained and destined to lead. He excelled in both the arts and athletics. He was an orator par excellence and a varsity player in basketball who recited poetry from memory. He was what the cognoscenti called a Renaissance Man.

More than this, he had role models in abundance. He knew personally most of the leaders of the country during its critical years after the second world war. — Elpidio Quirino, Camilo Osias, Quintin Paredes, Jose Avelino and other colleagues of his father in Congress and in the Senate. He would relate with fondness how he would drive them home in various levels of inebriation after a long night of celebration or a poker game in their house.

Like most of his privileged class, he was faced with a tall order — how to live up to the high expectations of his great father. He was growing up under the shadow of a tall tree which normally does not allow small trees a chance to see the sun and grow. He had to show that he was made of the same strong stock as an oak tree.

The fraternity, newly organised in 1946, gave him his first opportunity to show his worth. Brod Rico was chosen to represent the fraternity in its first competition — a campus-wide oratorical contest. To earn that honour he had to first compete with other brods, most of whom were Ateneo boys all trained in the art of rhetoric and elocution.

During the late 1940s and all of the ‘50s, the rite of passage for young leaders was to shine in oratorical contests on such topics as nationhood and patriotism. It was called “The Voice of Democracy”. Future leaders were vetted in these contests which were aired nationwide on radio.

As expected, Brod Rico won. His victory was reported in the country’s largest newspaper at the time — The Manila Times. But the most meaningful prize that he got from that victory was a handwritten note from his father on the news clipping: ”Junior, congratulations.” All at once his youthful yearnings for a fatherly complement has come to pass. For most of his life, he had kept in his wallet that piece of paper. When I mentioned this episode of his life in my speech in a general assembly of brods in Cebu, i noticed that he was deeply moved. His eyes were moist with nostalgia.

His oratorical championship ushered for the fraternity a series of other victories — capturing the presidency of the UP Student Council, editorship of the Philippine Collegian and leadership of many campus organisations. It established a tradition that we aimed to maintain in every generation of Beta Sigmans.

The Good Lord gave Brod Rico a long life so that he could relate to us personally the glories of our past in the fraternity. In his senior years, he continued to inspire young Betans. He would go extra lengths to attend inductions in faraway places. But above all, he welcomed Betans from the other schools outside UP. It was he who insisted that we institutionalise in the Cebu summit during Brod Mon Paje’s alumni presidency the principle that “all Betans are equal”.

In the sunset of his years, he was most fulfilled by the thought that the fraternity has expanded to so many schools and now established with alumni chapters in every corner of the world. It proved the principle that a great idea that he and his co-founders started would find its own missionaries.

In most of his inspirational speeches to us, Brod Rico would recite from memory with his sonorous voice his favourite poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “A Psalm of Life". I quote:

A Psalm of Life

BY HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,— act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

This poem distilled his personal philosophy that one should strive to become a role model to every young generation, which he had done quite well with us. It also summed up the meaning and purpose of his life or what Longfellow called his “footprints”.

       Good night.

FOUNDER RICO attended every Board meeting he could,he was our GUIDING LIGHT and we always deferred to what he had to say on issues the UPBSF Inc. tackled. He convinced me to continue to serve in the present UPBSFI BOT "to protect the gains of brod Rene & Rolly".
He loved our fraternity so much he attended anniversaries of every chapter he could.
Brod Rico loved to say that he never imagined that the Beta Sigma Fraternity has grown to what it is today.
He is OUR STORY.

Greetings of peace!

My prayers for the eternal repose of the soul of our dear Founder, Brother, Friend and Mentor Rico Arranz, and sincere condolences to Tita Sol, Sis/Dr. Marie and the whole Arranz family!

As a UPLB- initiated Beta Sigman, I did not have the early privilege of the UPD Brods who were able to meet some, if not all, of the Founders of our dear beloved fraternity. But thanks to the transferees to UPLB of the UPD brods in the mid- 60s, like Brod Jun Gomez, '63, who told us many inspiring stories on how resident members in the early '60s were able to listen and learn from the Founding Brods, especially from Founder Rico A, the victorious start and glory days of the fraternity in the UPD campus, since its creation in 1946. We were all ears then when stories of our fraternity were told and retold, including but not limited to the glory days but also in overcoming its challenges that ultimately make our UP Beta Sigma fraternity- "a fraternity of choice".

Brod Rico was the source of strength, wisdom and inspiration during my stint as President of the UPBSFI in 2011-2012. Whenever we met before, I always kissed his hand, in addition to our handshake and embrace, as a sign of respect and love to a brother.

I am happy to have visited Brod Rico last May 12, 2015 at his Condo in San Juan City, with Brods JJ Jayme, Joel Paredes and Butch Madarang, when he was still in control of his faculty. We still had a chance to laugh with one another, and my last time also to kiss his hand and embrace him. He already insinuated then that he was already tired and ... like to rest. I am sure that before he joined his Creator, he was able to receive His grace, mercy and compassion.

May I respectfully request all the members and friends of the brotherhood, including those from the non- UP system, to offer prayers for our dear Founder and Brother, and for Tita Sol and the bereaved family.

May God be praised!

Rene, uplb '64

So sad to hear that our founder left us forever. Without him, we won't be talking to each other today. May God bless him and welcome him to his kingdom where there is no pain, suffering but an eternal life replete with bliss and happiness.

Dear Tita Sol and Marie, and the Arranz family,

My mother and Gladis are beside me. We are overwhelmed with sadness. The Jesus R Jayme clan extends our sincere sympathies to you Tita Sol and the Arranz family.

Brod Rico Arranz with Brod Ted Topacio were the first Brods that welcomed me with open arms some 10 years ago. They called me Brod that evening. I told them that I was not a Brod. They replied "anak ka ni Jessie James" .. Brod ka rin.

Once, after one of my trips from the Philippines, my father asked me how my project was going. I said that the Brods, especially Brod Rico has helped me so much, and I am not even a Brod. My father replied, "talagang ganyan ang mga Brods lalo na si Rico". That has stuck in mind forever !!

I have been so very lucky and fortunate to hear many stories about the birth of the fratetnity from Brod Rico and from my father. I will never forget !

Thank you Brod Arranz for the undying love you have given each and everyone of us ! Thank you so very much for the example you have shown us !!

Thank you Tita Sol for sharing Brod Rico with us !!

Maraming Maraming Salamat !!

Sincerely,
JJ Jayme

Founder Atty. Rico Arranz

this man is one of a kind.
that is why he will always be special to me.
he guided me along the way and held my hand every step i took.
likewise with Tita Sol.
he was the beacon, he will always be the inspiration.
there’s so much to say but a thousand more to be felt.
it maybe hard to accept his departure but comforting to know that he will be resting away from physical pains.
he is a force to reckon with, a binding visionary that always preaches love among us.
a betan with clenched fist in fighting for what is right, yet always ready with that affectionate smile.
his life is not the story of UP Beta Sigma.
HE is THE STORY. HE is OUR STORY.
and he LIVED his life to make us proud and tell the story.

brod Rico, you are not only our FOUNDER.
YOU ARE UP Beta Signa Fraternity.

RICO ARRANZ '46

No words are sufficient to describe what Rico Arranz meant to us, Beta Sigmans. And that is because of the things did for us. He was an ubiquitous figure both in official and non-official functions, in occasions large or small. In most of these events, he was accompanied by his loving and very supportive wife, Tita Sol, whose name has also become a “household name” in the fraternity.

Founder. Father. Inspiration. Leader. Visionary. Orator. Sage, Athlete. Role-Model. Legend.

At almost 90, he was blessed with a long life, and he made use of this rare blessing with a full, especially for us Beta Sigmans. The fraternity was not only his family, his source of happiness, inspiration and pride but also a place where he was most relaxed and be himself. Among other things, I remember him to be in many major fraternity occasions whether in or outside of the Phiippines – as a speaker and most honored guest, or as one who would be inducting officers, or as a recipient of a highest award bestowed on a Betan, or as one of the convenors of a new fraternity Chapter or a major project or endeavor, or as a major resource towards the generation of visionary ideas. I will not use up much space to specify what is being said here, for there are many examples which other brothers will most probably mention in their respective eulogies.

But he would also be seen in minor activities – a welcome for a visiting brod, a brother’s birthday party, or even a Batch party. He would also attend a residents meeting at the UP Tambayan, or a house-warming, a Chapter gathering, or marching along with residents and alumni brods during a UP Lantern Parade. Or even a jug-a-lug session.

For all these, Founder Rico Arranz has no equal. And all the love that we bestow on him may not even equal or the love and dedication that he had for us.

We will let you go for now with the hope that we will meet again in the life beyond.

Let me just tell this story. The first time I met Founder Rico was in December 1971. I was in MBA grad school and was just elected as UPD GP. Our first project was alumni Christmas caroling. I sent a letter to the selected alumni. Brod Rico accepted. First night, first stop was at his beautiful home in Greenhills. Happened that he had a party and his guests included, if I remember correctly, some visiting relatives from the US. We heartily sang our Christmas carols while they listened in the receiving room. Not only did we enjoy the very welcoming arms and pleasant chatter of Brod Rico, and the sumptuous dinner. He sent us off with a crisp 100 peso bill, which was a nice surprise for us since 20 pesos was quite a good "pamasko" at the time. I've seen Brod Rico a few times after moving to the US and had recounted the story to him each time. He would always be amused by it, one time even calling Tita Sol at the UP SoCal fellowship reception for them in '88 so she could hear it too.

From Brod Rico, I've learned life's lessons from his unique and personal Betan generosity, kindness, camaraderie, and zeal for life. We all miss him and pray for him.

"What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why you left this earth, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget"
Be with God now Brother atty, Melecio "rico" Arranz.. founding batch of the great Beta sigma Fraternity..

FAREWELL BROTHER FOUNDER RICO ARRANZ(U.P. Beta Sigma Fraternity 1946)
First you go out your way
And the vibe is feeling strong and what's small turn to a brotherhood,
a brotherhood turn into a bond
and that bond will never be broken! And the love will never get lost!
And when brotherhood come first then the line will never be crossed established it on our own
When that line had to be drawn
and that line is what we reach
So let the light guide your way
Hold every memory
As you go and every road you take will always lead you home.
REST IN PEACE BROTHER
SEE YOU AGAIN!
